What Prince Hamlet could have said had he been reading the Book of Leviticus.

The Great Bible, the first authorised edition of the Bible in English, was first published in 1539. When Shakespeare wrote Hamlet, at some point between 1599 and 1611, I think that he was, at least unconsciously, influenced by the Book of Leviticus. Leviticus has something to say about ghosts (Leviticus 19.31 and 20.6), homosexuality (Leviticus 20.13 - compare Hamlet 2.2.275) and intercourse with a brother’s wife (although the punishment for this is unclear - Leviticus 20.21). Many of the same animals, birds and reptiles that Hamlet refers to (and which I have referred to in my poem) appear in Leviticus:
• Chameleon: Hamlet 3.2.89; Leviticus 11.30.
• Mole: Hamlet 1.5.161; Leviticus 11.29.
• Camel: Hamlet 3.2.367; Leviticus 11.4.
• Weasel / Jerboa: Hamlet 3.2.370; Leviticus 11.29.
• Whale / “a fish without scales or fins”: Hamlet 3.2.372; Leviticus 11.10.
• Hawk: Hamlet 2.2.315; Leviticus 11.16.
• Handsaw (Heron) / “the various kinds of cormorant”: Hamlet 2.2.315; Leviticus 11.10.
• Adder / Snake: Hamlet 3.4.201; Leviticus 11.42.
The gecko is referred to Leviticus 11.30 but not in the play.
Other references to Leviticus in my poem are:
• the need for priests to be physically perfect (Leviticus 21.17-20)
• stipulations on whom a priest can marry (Leviticus 21.14)
• the banishment of a goat (Leviticus 16.8-10)
• the sacrificial ram (Leviticus 16.3)

The reference to philosophies, towards the end of the poem, echoes Hamlet 1.5.165-166.
