Azazel speaks to Jesus in the wilderness

“But the goat, on which the lot fell to be scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.” (Leviticus 16:10)
“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)

“I felt the blood upon my head,

wandered off without being led;

those who prayed, drew my lot,

said I was sin within the flock –

a goat to carry fear and dread,

so God could proffer quail and bread.

 

So, follow, lamb, where I have led,

crown of thorns upon your head;

sanctify your earnest flock

(sinful as Cain, foolish as Lot);

bless them for their fear and dread

with fish and wine and figs and bread.

 

Kings and queens bow their heads

and turn your body into bread

then magically, by drawing lots,

choose apostles, build their flocks

of people lost in fear and dread,

that wilderness – where once I led.”
