Sins of Omission

“God is love; he who dwells in love is dwelling in God, and God in him.” (1 John, chapter 4, verse 16).

If God’s love is in each one of us,

not just this drunk on the night-bus

who fell asleep and missed her stop,

then woke-up sprawled in the aisle

– the driver swerved for a dog or a child –

but in us and our compassionate smiles,

wanting her to think we think it’s okay

if she gets like this every Saturday –

it’s a joke, not our business anyway;

if God’s love really is in each one of us,

is God still laughing at herself on this bus

and are smiles of omission good enough?
