Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho

“Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho” is an African-American spiritual, probably composed by slaves in the first half of the 19th century. It has been sung by numerous children in Church Sunday Schools. I have rewritten the lyrics so that they fit more closely with the story that is told in the Bible (Book of Joshua, Chapters 2-6)

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho, Jericho, Jericho;

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho and the walls came tumbling down.

Talk about the deeds of Gideon, talk about the deeds of Saul,

there’s none like good old Joshua at the battle of Jericho.

Joshua smuggled spies into Jericho – stealthily they crawled

up to the hovel of Rahab, she lived in a corner of a wall.

She hid the spies upon a roof when Jericho’s sentries called;

and in reward they did afford a strand of scarlet cord.

Rahab tricked the soldiers of Jericho, Jericho, Jericho;

Rahab tricked the soldiers of Jericho patrolling the city walls.

Talk about the song of Deborah or the song of Miriam,

there’s none with a song like Rahab in the cities of Canaan.

The spies led Joshua over the river into Canaan;

Joshua crossed the river Jordan with the Ark of Covenant;

then round the walls of Jericho he marched his mighty band,

“Blow those horns” cried Joshua, “the battle is in my hand!”

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho, Jericho, Jericho;

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho and the walls came tumbling down.

Talk about the deeds of Gideon, talk about the deeds of Saul,

there’s none like good old Joshua at the battle of Jericho.

Joshua killed the men of Jericho, killed them with his sword,

killed all the women of Jericho, ‘cept Rahab with her cord.

Joshua killed the children of Jericho, killed them with his sword,

he killed them all on the orders of the angel of the Lord.

Then Joshua burnt down Jericho, so Jericho is no more;

the only one remembering Jericho lived in a corner of a wall,

where men would come to pay for her who were lonely and fearful,

and she was poor and lived in a wall, so she betrayed those people.

Joshuas fight battles for Jerichos, Jerichos, Jerichos;

Joshuas smuggle spies into Jerichos and the walls come tumbling down.

They’re handing cords of covenant to our sold, forgotten Rahabs;

and we don’t have the soldiers that we used to have.
